Athletics Day

We have been practising lots of skills to compete in on Athletics Day so everyone was ready for the big day on Friday. Here are some people's thoughts.

"On Friday it was Athletics day!" I had so much fun! First we did high jump and then we did shot put after that we did long jump which I was really good at! and then we did hurdles! And then after all those things we did sprints! On the first race I was so, so, so, so and so worried that I would come last but when the blocks clapped together I raced as fast as I ever had and I came first! I was so proud of myself. I think my shoes are magic!
By Ruby

I came third in the sprints on Friday. I wasn't scared of anything. I liked everything. I was the best at high jump and long jump. I like Athletics. It was fun.
By Indie

On Friday afternoon it was Athletics. I was bad at shot put. My favourite bit was the hurdles. I came third in every sprinting race. After that I was puffed. I always cleared the bar in high jump.
By Cameron

At Athletics I won all of my races even the finals!!!! I was so happy that I was almost about to scream and it was very funny that the teachers had to have a race.
By Mia

On Athletics day I was scared at the high jump but I had fun at jumping up and down and I had lots of fun at high jump. I like how I did throw the rockets too.
By Teddy

On Friday I went to Athletics. I felt excited about all of it. We went to the Long Jump first, I got to the third cone. Then I went to the throwing. I got an extra point for hitting Mrs O'Leary.
By Tighe

At Athletics on fun Friday my favourite thing was ... fast sprinting!! I ran as fast as I could, I came first two times and third once. I said " I'm nervous." But I am just going to try and on your marks, get set, Bang!! I was by Ruby and we had a tie. After all I liked it but it got trickier. We had to go all the way from... the back of the field to the red turf. "I can't run that far" but I did. I had no drink with all the Athletics so I ran on the turf and got a hot drink from the shiny water fountain but it cooled down Ahh!!

Crystal did some Procedural writing :
On Friday it was Athletics. I was with the year two girls. First we did high jump. Then did shot put. Next long jump. After that hurdles. Lastly you had to try to hit someone it's called javelins. Finally the ... races. I did four races.

Mia's News

Look what Mia brought to school this morning.
She found these two freshwater crayfish in a creek. She called one Fatty and one Skinny, can you tell which is which?
After we all had a good look we went down to our school creek and let them go.

Measuring : Body Art

As part of our Maths measuring unit we have been measuring parts of our bodies to cut out shapes and string to form a garden picture. In pairs we have been using comparative measuring language. The children have measured from their wrist to elbow, shoulder to fingertips, feet, hands, noses and fingers.
It was great to see the Room one kids working together on their Maths task and also discussing measuring in a fun context. Here are some photos of the work in progress.

Paper Shaper Puppet Show

Room One along with the other Juniors and the Middle School went into Napier to the Century Theatre  to watch a puppet show. Live performances are always interesting and most of the children were enthralled. The puppets taught us a great lesson about recycling.
Here are a few of our stories.

Inquiry Learning

This term we have been investigating Muddy Creek. We learnt about the creatures that live in and around the creek. We tested the water to see how healthy it was then we decided how we could maintain our healthy creek.

Here we are making presentations to teach others how to keep our creek healthy. Some of us made games, some wrote letters and some made posters.

'Position' Stories

We have been using positional language in Maths and especially learning to tell our Left from our  Right, which is not easy!!

Here are some of these Maths words incorporated in some fabulous fictional stories.

I broke Mum's favourite tin so I hid right of the tree then I saw Mum so I went left of the tree. Then I sneakily went past and hid in between two couches but I heard Mum say "Come out Tyla!" After I tiptoed under my bed and jumped over the couches. Then I came out and said to Mum "Sorry Mum". "It's alright" Mum said. I went behind the table onto the couch and sat beside Mum.Then I went in front of Mum and gave her a big hug.
By Tyla

Once I was sitting on the couch. My Dad got back from work then he sneaked behind me. He sneaked on the left BOO! he shouted. The next day I was on the couch, he sneaked on the right BOO!
By Mia

My Mum told me to look after the Year R children with Mrs Noodle in Red class. We played hide and seek. I was the seeker. I looked beside the play house, behind the curtains, I looked under the table and in front of Mrs Noodle. I found you! I said to Bella. But then the bell rang, everybody came and sat on the mat. I think everybody had a great time at school.

I was in school and my friends were looking for me. I was hiding behind a tree. My friends were looking on the bridge then found me. We were playing Hide and Seek.

I was in the jungle with Tyla and Jade. We were playing Hide and Seek. I hid between two logs with Jade. Tyla was counting. "You found us" I was in. Jade hid behind a tall tree and Tyla hid between two bushes. I found Jade first. I hid in the tallest, greenest grass ever. Tyla hid behind a pukeko. Boo! Jade said to Tyla. Tyla said ... "Wow! Look at the tall grass." Tyla whispered Crystal might be behind that grass. But Tyla forgot. I got tired behind that grass. Tyla found me behind the grass. I woke up. Tyla and Jade forgot to hide behind something. I shouted " you need to hide behind something!" They didn't listen to me because... they were asleep. It was night. They were already hidden. They hid behind the grass. I whispered " Are they behind, beside, between or in front?"
By Crystal

I ran and did flipping on the tramp and it was on the right and I have a trampoline with a slide. It is a tunnel.

Mum was looking for me in the castle. I was... beside a tiger. The tiger was in the castle. My Mum and I were playing Hide and Seek. Zac was playing too. I said" Hahahaha!" There was a pool in the castle. I dived under the water. I hid behind a bush. I was beside Zac. I went left and right. I went under the poles. I went under the chairs. I went under the tables. Zac went under a dog. Zac went under a person. I went under a cat. I went under a broken wall. I laughed so much I went under a couch. Zac laughed so much. "Hahaha".
By Jade

We went under when they went beside, we went in front when they went under. We went over when they went between when we went right.
By Cameron

I wanted to play Hide and Seek with my Dad. Dad was in. He counted to ten. I hid beside a hedge he went left and he couldn't find me. But then he saw a foot, he got closer and closer and I said BOO!!!

Measuring Weight

Maths Groups Wha and Rima are pictured here using the Balance Scales to compare weights of our classroom objects. We were using the measurement language heavy, heavier, heaviest. light, lighter and lightest. Then we ordered our objects accordingly.
